MLCC multilayer Ceramic capacitor is an electronic component widely used in electronic equipment, which has high density, high reliability and excellent electrical performance. In MLCC chip capacitors, COG and X5R are two common materials that have significant differences in usage and performance.

 

Firstly, COG and X5R have different characteristics in terms of temperature coefficient. The temperature coefficient of COG capacitors is very low, usually below ± 30ppm/℃. This means that the capacitance value of COG capacitors varies very little at different temperatures, maintaining good stability. The temperature coefficient of X5R capacitors is usually between ± 15% and ± 22%, which is relatively large. This means that the capacitance value of the X5R capacitor will vary significantly at different temperatures. For some circuits that do not require high stability, the X5R capacitor is a more economical and practical choice.

 

Secondly, there are also differences in the operating voltage between COG and X5R. COG capacitors typically have a high operating voltage, which can reach hundreds of volts. The working voltage of X5R capacitors is usually between tens to hundreds of volts. So when designing high-voltage circuits, choosing COG capacitors is a more suitable choice. For low-voltage circuits, X5R capacitor can better meet the demand.

 

Thirdly, there are also differences in capacity between COG and X5R. The capacity of a COG capacitor is usually relatively small, typically between a few picoseconds and a few microfunctions. The capacity of X5R capacitors is usually large, reaching several milliamperes or even hundreds of milliamperes. Therefore, in circuits with high capacity requirements, selecting X5R capacitors can better meet the requirements.

 

Fourthly, there is also a price difference between COG and X5R. Due to the low temperature coefficient and high operating voltage of COG capacitors, their prices are relatively high. The X5R capacitor has a larger temperature coefficient and a lower operating voltage, so its price is relatively low. Therefore, in cost sensitive projects, choosing X5R capacitors can better reduce the total cost.

 

In summary, COG and X5R are two common MLCC chip capacitor materials, which have significant differences in temperature coefficient, operating voltage, capacity, and price. According to specific application requirements, selecting appropriate capacitor materials is the key to ensuring stable circuit performance and cost control.
